Richard Alm BA AFCA
Designer, painter, sculptor, print maker and producer of fine art.
Richard knew he was going to be an artist from the age of 10. Throughout high school he worked part time for a large printing firm apprenticing as a commercial artist. Through university he operated the campus poster shop designing & producing print materials for the various student bodies.
In his undergraduate years he studied under several of Canada’s leading painters and sculptors including Otto Rogers, Ernst Lindner, Elie Bornstein, Robert Murray and William Epp. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1967.
The intervening 35 years was a worldwide journey of design & discovery. In 2002, Richard returned to his first passions sculpture & painting.
Always in the creative field, Richard learned the marketing and advertising basics at Scott Paper and Trizec Equities of Montreal. Alm Marketing & Advertising Ltd., a Vancouver based advertising agency was incorporated in 1977, with Hyatt International as a major client. Worldwide travel was the norm.
In 1984 with EXPO 86 only 2 years away, Richard formed EDTI Exhibit Management Inc. and created a joint venture with several major exhibit contractors including Warner Communications of New York. The JV company called EDTI Projects Inc., was General Contractor or Prime Exhibit Contractor for 11 of Expo’s 50 plus pavilions.
Turning a page in his career Richard became an Official Corporate Sponsor of Expo 88 in Brisbain Australia, and introduced WineSoda Beverages Inc., the first of 4 new products he would invent and produce over the next 14 years. Each product would include prototypes, the patent process, financing, and market roll-out. A sculptor at heart, Richard and his team hand built each of his prototypes as working pieces of art.
During his travels, a pencil, a camera and a computer were never far from hand. From these images and memories, Richard is now documenting on canvas and in sculpture his global journeys, his prairie roots, his home city of Vancouver and the beauty of Whistler Mountain, hosts of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Operating out of his “Alley Gallery & Giclee Studio” overlooking False Creek in Vancouver, Richard produces archival quality giclee art reproductions on canvas or watercolor paper for artists throughout BC and Alberta.
